tively.Withinthebuildingenergyefficiencyrealm,greenbuildingsareemergingasawaytohelpreducebuildings’energyandenvironmentalimpacts.Topromotethemarkettransformationofgreenbuildingsanddifferentiatedesignandperformance,U.S.andChinahavebothdevelopednationalgreenbuildingratingprogramsandsupportingpolicies.TheU.S.GreenBuildingCouncilestablishedtheLeadershipinEnergyandEnvironmentalDesign（LEED）programin1998whiletheChinesegovernmentestablisheditsGreenBuildingEvaluationandLabeling（GBEL）programin2008.ThispaperpresentsparativeanalysisoftheU.S.LEEDandChineseGBELratingsystems,processes,scoringsystems,andenablingpolicies.Thispaperfindsthatwhilebothcountriesusegreenbuildingdesignandoperationalratingsystemswithsimilarscoringcategories,theydifferinprogramadministration,scoringrequirementsandallocation,andtypesofsupportingpolicies.U.S.LEEDisdevelopedandadministeredbymitteesofbuildingindustrystakeholdersandoffersmoreflexibilityinhowcertificationlevelscanbemet.TheChineseGBELisentirelygovernment-runwithstricterrequirementsforachievingratinglevels,butisexpectedtoundergochangeswitharevisedratingsysteminlate2014.Analysisofhowsimilaritiesanddifferencesinratingsystemsandsupportingpolicieshaveshapedthetechnicalandmarketdevelopmentofgreenbuildingsispresented.Subsequentchallengesandpolicyimplicationsforthefuturedevelopmentofgreenbuildingsarediscussed.
