Abstract:NathanielHawthornewasgoodatmakingarchetypes.HewascalledthemostacplishedAmericanstorytellerandnovelist.HeisoneofthewritersinAmericanRenaissanceonwhomChristianityhasahugeinfluence.TheimpactwhichtheBiblemakesmaybedatedbacktohisfamilybackground.Hewasborninapuritanfamily.Puritanismhasastronginfluenceonhim.Therearemanyarchetypesinthisnovel,suchasthearchetypesofAdam,Eve,Satan,scapegoat,thebattlebetweengoodandevilandsoon.TheScarletLetteralsoisindispensabletounderstandtheBiblewellifonewantstohaveagoodmandofwesternliterature.

Thescarletletterisseennotasromancebutasmyth-thestoryofmanandwomaninafallenhumanworld.TheBiblebeginswiththestoryofAdamandEve,whowereexpelledfromtheGardenofEdenforeatingfromthetreeofknowledgeofgoodandevil.TheexperienceofHesterandDimmesdalerecallsofEveandAdambecauseinbothcases,sinresultsinexpulsionandsuffering.Butitalsoresultsinknowledge-specifically,inknowledgeofwhatitmeanstobehuman.
