Notallpaniesarecapableofmaintaingoodreputationovertime.Onceananization’sreputationisdamaged,itmustrebuilditself.Therecoveryperiodoftenrequiresmoreeffort.“Ittakestimeforareputationtocoalesceinobservers’minds”(Fombrun&VanRiel,2004,p.5).InthecaseofGeneralMotors,withitscurrentPRcampaign,newCEOandbusinessstrategy,itisonitswaytorebuildingitsreputation.Itwillnotbeeasyandnotmuchcanbedonetoalleviatethetimeandenergyrequiredforthisgreattask.ButGMshouldprevail,withthecorrectCSRplan,keepinginmindthatthefundamentalbusinessofGMistomakecars:safeandefficientcarsthataresustainableandreliable.GM’snewmessage,accordingtoCFORayYoung:"WewillfixGMonceandforall".
