Astronomyistheoldestofallofthenaturalsciences,anditsoriginsareboundupinancientreligious,mythological,andastrologicalpractices.Throughtheages,however,enlighteningdiscoveriesbymasterminds,suchasAristotle,Copernicus,Newton,Einstein,andHubble,havetransformedAstronomyintoamodernscience.Nowadays,astronomersusepowerfulEarthandspace-basedtelescopes,interplaarymissions,andsuperputerstodelveintothesecretsoftheUniverse.DespitethesefundamentalchangesinthescienceofAstronomy,astronomersstillfocusonansweringthe"bigquestions"thathaveoccupiedmankindforcenturies,suchas"WheredoestheUniverseefrom","WhatisthefateoftheEarthandofourSun"and"IstherelifeelsewhereintheUniverse"Thiscoursewillprovidestudentswithanoverviewofastronomicalresearchcoveringawiderangeoftopics,includingthehistoryofastronomy,theplasinoursolarsystem,thebirth,lifeanddeathofstars,blackholes,galaxies,the"BigBang"theory,cosmology,thesearchforextraterrestriallife,andspaceexploration.
教学大纲:
Thecourseissuitableforallstudentswithageneralinterestinastronomyandcosmology.Abackgroundinnaturalsciencesisnotrequired.Theamountofmathematicswillbeminimal,butanunderstandingofbasicmathematics(logarithms,exponents,etc)isremended.ThecoursewillbetaughtinEnglish,andtheassignmentsandexaminationwillbeinEnglish.KnowledgeoftheChineselanguageisnotrequired.Thecoursewillconsistoffourweeksoflectures,withsevenhoursoflecturesperweek,andonefinalexamof100minutes.Inaddition,eachstudentwillexploreanassignedastronomy-relatedtopicindetail,andwriteanessay.Theknowledgeofthestudentswillbeassessedwithawrittenfinalexam,worth70%ofthefinalaward.A2000-wordessaywillcontribute20%tothefinalaward,andclassattendanceandparticipationwillcontribute10%.Thelectureserieswillbeanizedasfollows:
Week1:Historyofastronomy,astronomyinsocietyandculture,thenightsky,celestialmechanics,theelectromagicspectrum,telescopes,andspaceexploration.
Week2:TheSun,theplas,ets,moons,andasteroidsinourSolarSystem,exo-solarplas,starformation,andplaformation.
Week3:Structureandevolutionofstars,starclusters,theMilkyWayGalaxy,activegalaxies,andgalaxyevolution.
Week4:Cosmology,theBigBangtheory,generalrelativity,blackholes,andthesearchforlifetheUniverse.
