In1789theUSgovernmentpassedalawwhichsaidthatthelandoftheAmericanIndianscouldneverbetakenfromthemwithouttheiragreement.Onehundredyearslater,however,theIndianshadonlyaverysmallpartofthelandthatoriginallybelongedtothem.Howdidthisgreatinjusticeoccur
After1812whitesettlersbegantomovewestacrossNorthAmerica.Atfirst,thesettlersandtheIndianslivedinpeace.However,thenumberofsettlesincreasedgreatlyeveryyear,andslowlytheIndiansbegantoseethewhitesettlersinadangertotheirsurvival.Tofeedthemselves,thesettleskilledmoreandmorewildanimals.TheIndians,whodependedontheseanimalsforfood,hadtostruggleagainststarvation.Thesettlersalsobroughtwiththemmanydiseasewhichweremoninwhitesociety,butwhichwerenewfortheIndians.GreatnumbersofIndiansbecamesickanddied.
Morelandwasneededfortheincreasingnumberofwhitesettlers.InWashington,theoldrespectfortherightsoftheIndiansdisappeared.TheoldpromisestotheIndianswerebroken,thefederalgovernmentbegantomovegroupsofIndiansfromtheiroriginalhomelandstoother,poorerpartsofthecountry.SomeIndiansreactedangrilyandviolentlytothistreatment.Theybegantoattackwhitesettlers,andtheIndiansWarsbegan.Forthirtyyears,untilthelate1880s.differentgroupsofIndiansfoughtagainsttheinjusticesofthewhiteman.Theyhadafewfamoussuccesses,buttheresultofthestrugglewasneverindoubt.Thereweretoomanywhitesoldiers,andtheyweretoopowerful,ManyIndianswerekilled,thesurvivorsweremovedfromtheirhomelandstodifferentareasofthecountry.Itwasaterriblechapterinthehistoryofacountrythatpromisedfreedomandequalitytoeveryone.
