Electronicmerce,monlyknownase-merce,consistsofthebuyingandsellingofproductsorservicesoverelectronicsystemssuchastheInterandotherputerworks.TheamountoftradeconductedelectronicallyhasgrownextraordinarilysincethespreadoftheInter.Awidevarietyofmerceisconductedinthisway,spurringanddrawingoninnovationsinelectronicfundstransfer,supplychainmanagement,Intermarketing,onlinetransactionprocessing,electronicdatainterchange(EDI),inventorymanagementsystems,andautomateddatacollectionsystems.ModernelectronicmercetypicallyusestheWorldWideWebatleastatsomepointinthetransaction'slifecycle,althoughitcanenpassawiderrangeoftechnologiessuchase-mailaswell.
Alargepercentageofelectronicmerceisconductedentirelyelectronicallyforvirtualitemssuchasaccesstopremiumcontentonawebsite,butmostelectronicmerceinvolvesthetransportationofphysicalitemsinsomeway.Onlineretailersaresometimesknownase-tailersandonlineretailissometimesknownase-tail.AlmostallbigretailershaveelectronicmercepresenceontheWorldWideWeb.
ElectronicmercethatisconductedbetweenbusinessesisreferredtoasBusiness-to-businessorB2B.B2Bcanbeopentoallinterestedparties(e.g.modityexchange)orlimitedtospecific,pre-qualifiedparticipants(privateelectronicmarket).
Electronicmerceisgenerallyconsideredtobethesalesaspectofe-business.Italsoconsistsoftheexchangeofdatatofacilitatethefinancingandpaymentaspectsofthebusinesstransactions.

Earlydevelopment
Themeaningofelectronicmercehaschangedoverthelast30years.Originally,electronicmercemeantthefacilitationofmercialtransactionselectronically,usingtechnologysuchasElectronicDataInterchange(EDI)andElectronicFundsTransfer(EFT).Thesewerebothintroducedinthelate1970s,allowingbusinessestosendmercialdocumentslikepurchaseordersorinvoiceselectronically.Thegrowthandacceptanceofcreditcards,automatedtellermachines(ATM)andtelephonebankinginthe1980swerealsoformsofelectronicmerce.Fromthe1990sonwards,electronicmercewouldadditionallyincludeenterpriseresourceplanningsystems(ERP),datamininganddatawarehousing.
PerhapsitisintroducedfromtheTelephoneExchangeOffice,ormaybenot.Theearliestexampleofmany-to-manyelectronicmerceinphysicalgoodswastheBostonComputerExchange,amarketplaceforusedputerslaunchedin1982.Thefirstonlineinformationmarketplace,includingonlineconsulting,waslikelytheAmericanInformationExchange,anotherpre-Interonlinesystemintroducedin1991.
