olymersrefertoalargegroupmaterialthatisformedbyrepeatingmolecules.Polymersusuallydemonstratebehaviorsdifferentfromconventionalengineeringmaterials,suchasmetalsandceramics:Theirbehaviorsstronglydependontemperature,atthetemperatureaboveglasstransitiontemperature,theyareverystretchableanddemonstratethesocalledelastomericbehavior,atthetemperaturebelowglasstransitiontemperature,theybehavelikeametalbutwithrelativelystrains.Becauseoftheextraordinaryrangeofpropertiesofpolymericmaterials,theyplayanessentialandubiquitousroleineverydaylife,rangingfromfamiliarsyntheticplasticsandrubberstonaturalbiopolymerssuchasproteinsthatareessentialforlife.Duetorecentadvancesinengineeringlookingforlight-weightdesignandfastdevelopmentofnovelbiomedicaldevices,tissueengineering,anddrugdeliverysystems,mechanicsofpolymershasattractedincreasingresearchinterests.Thisshortcoursewilldiscussthefundamentalphysicsforthepolymerbehaviorsandwillcoverthefundamentalsofpolymermechanics.Thecoursewillbesplitintotwoparts.Inthefirstpart,wewillstartwiththemostfundamentalphysicsofpolymers,entropicelasticity.Wewillthendiscussthedifferencebetweenasyntheticpolymerchainandabiopolymerchainandthusaflexiblechainandasemi-flexiblechain.Attheendofthispart,wewilldiscussbrieflyrubberelasticity,affineandnon-affinedeformationincytoskeleton.Asanapplicationofthemodels,environmentallyresponsivehydrogelmodelingwillbediscussed.Inthesecondpart,wewillstartwithsimplemodelsforviscoelasticity.Wewillthendiscusstime-temperaturesuperpositionprincipleforpolymersandnon-equilibriumstateofapolymer.Attheendofthispart,wewilldiscussconstitutivemodelsforpolymers.Asanapplicationoftheconstitutivemodelandtime-temperaturesuperpositionprinciple,athermoviscoelasticconstitutivemodelforshapememorypolymerswillbediscussed.
授课方式:课堂讲授为主,课堂讨论为辅.
考核方式:根据课堂表现,课后作业及大作业的形式进行综合考查.

齐航博士目前是美国科罗拉多大学机械工程系的TenuredAssociateProfessor.他在清华大学力学系获得本科及硕士学位,2003年在美国麻省理工学院机械系获得博士学位.03-04年在MIT做了为期一年的博士后.2004年起他加入UniversityofColorado(CU)atBoulder机械系担任助理教授.他的研究兴趣为:利用实验和理论的方法研究材料的结构及功能之间的内在联系,包括高分子材料及复合材料,碳纳米管,生物材料等,以及开发基于软材料的传感器及致动器.他获得过科罗拉多大学的青年教师奖(2005),美国NSF的CAREERaward(2007),机械工程系的杰出研究奖(2016),等.
