Timeislikeasong.Ifspringisaeulogytofaunaandfloralsplen-dor,autumnismoresubstantialandisthetimeforagoodharvest.ForTangBaoheng,chiefadvisortotheZhejiangArchitectureandDesignInstitute,theharvestingseasonhaseaftersixdecadesofmitmentandenthusiasminthepursuitofwhathecallsthe‘architecturalspiritoftheOrient’.Whatthemanhasachievedoverthepast60yearsproveshissuprememasteryofbeautythroughabinationoftheeastandthewest.
Inhistime,TangBaohengwasveryprobablytheonlystu-dentofarchitecturethatenteredtheNationalArtSchool（today’sHangzhou-basedChinaAcademyofArts）bypassingtheofficialen-tranceexaminationoftheschool,pletedallpulsorycoursesandgraduatedwithadegree.Regardedasa‘holyland’forartisticpursuits,theschoolwasheadedbysuchvirtuososasLinFengmianandPanTianshou.Inthoseyears,theyoungTangBaohengwasim-mersedinahighlyculturedmilieuthatwasalsocontributedbyhissketchteacherZhaoWuji,wholaterbecameamemberofthecoun-try’smostprestigious‘arthalloffame’.

withstudyexperiencesabroad.
Tangstillrememberstheyear1949justlikeitwasyesterday.Asastudentmajoringinarchitectureintheschool,hegotthechancetowitnessandactuallytakepartinthemakingoftheblueprintfortheHangzhouGreatHallofthePeople,thelargestcivilarchitecturalundertakinginHangzhouinhistime.Theprojectwassupervisedbythreeofhisteachers,whosespecializationandhardworkfedthemosteye-catchinglandmarkinthecity.Overthedecadessincegraduation,Tanghasbeenkeepinginclosetouchwithhisalmamater,makingthebestofeveryopportu-nitythateshiswaytocarryforwardthelegacyoftheschoolineveryprojecthehaslaidhishandson.In1953,heworkedwithateamledbyWangDajin,fromtheDepartmentofSculptureoftheschool,onamemorialdesignprojectforHaimen.
TangisthedesignerbehindtheSantaishanSanatoriumfortheZhejiangFederationofLaborUnions,seatedinthescenicSan-taishanareainHangzhouandunveiledin1954.Overlookingthetranquillakeandsetagainstthefloralbackdropofthelakesidehills,thesanatoriumisanexquisite,colorfulpoundthatechoestheundulatingskylineofthelakeshores,addingarefreshingtouchtothelakesidevistaofHangzhou.
Thearchitect’scharismaticarchitecturalstyleisalsobroughtintofullswinginhisdesignfortheHangzhouSanatoriumofChinaCivilAviation.Thelayoutandstructureofthetwo-storeylovelyplexblendsperfectlyintothenaturaltopographyandvegeta-tion,creatingamagical,‘all-in-one’eco-spaceforrejuvenation.
AllthesesanatoriumprojectsofferedTanganidealoutlettovoicehisaestheticthoughtsbasedonasolidfoundationlaidbytheyearsattheHangzhouArtSchool.
Overtheyears,TangBaohenghascontributedhistalenttothedesignandconstructionofmanyotherbeautifulplacesinHangzhou,highlightedbysuchmasterpiecesastherenovationprojectfortheXie’sGardenVillaandtheOrioleHotel.
Thebestofthebest,asthearchitectwouldfeeljustifiedtocallit,isaprojectnumbered‘5801’.Theingeniousconceptualizationbehindtheprojectthatisknownbytoday’sHangzhoupeopleastheWang’sVillaortheWestLakeStateGuesthousemakesthis‘float-ingvillapound’anarchitecturalnoveltyandapieceofartintherealsenseoftheword.ChairmanMaoZedonglovedtheplacesomuchthathestayedintheguesthouse29timesfrom1960on-ward,almostmakingthevillaasummerhouseforhissojournsinHangzhou.
EveryarchitecturalcreationbyTangBaohengdisplayshisper-fectunderstandingofthecharacteristicsofthetimeandtheclime.Manyofthemajorprojectsheadedbythearchitect,suchastheNo.1buildingoftheAdministrationHeadquartersoftheZhejiangProvincialPeople’sGovernment,ZhejiangSportsStadiumandHangzhouTheatre,fallintothepublicarchitecturecategory.Un-veiledin1959,theauditoriumoftheHangzhouHotelisageniuspieceofartcraftedbyZhaoShenandTangBaoheng.Theaudito-riumtookonlythreemonthstoplete,demonstratingastrikingfusionofthequaint‘Jiangnan’flavorswithaboldmoderntouch.
Architecturalfocusapart,TangBaohengspendsalotoftimeontheresearchofvariousstylesoftraditionalfolkhousesinChina,inordertodrawinspirationfromtheinfiniteconnotationsofthewis-domofancientChinesearchitectsandartisans.
