Introduction：In　the　scarlet　letter　we　can　see　that　Hester　suffered　a　lot　from　bitter　life.　So,　I　analyze　one　of　male　persons　who　had　close　relation　with　her---　Chillingworth.　In　this　essay　I　will　talk　about　the　selfish　of　Chillingworth　and　selfish　what　consequence　he　made.　If　we　read　the　novel　with　much　attention　and　consider　the　society　he　lived　in　as　well　as　his　status　and　education　he　obtained,　we　may　find　it　is　unfair　to　say　that　Chillingworth　was　a　coward.　Chillingworth　had　made　an　impression　of　worst　sinner　to　readers.　However,　he　also　had　a　tendency　to　goodness.　His　goodness　to　Pearl,　the　daughter　of　his　unfaithful　wife　also　displayed　it.　Every　chapter　has　symbolism　displayed　through　characterization.　All　of　above　will　be　discussed　in　the　following　text.

1．Chillingworth’　selfishness

when　he　arrived　at　Boston,　seeing　his　wife　Hester　standing　in　the　front　of　the　public,　he　hided　himself　and　his　real　name　unhesitatingly.No　sooner　had　he　known　the　fact　than　he　began　his　devil–　resembling　road　of　the　crazy　revenge—pried　and　destroyed　the　other　people　the　dignity　of　soul.　For　Chillingworth’s　latter　half　of　lifetime,　his　most　pleasure　is　to　tempt　Hester　to　speak　out　the　partner　of　the　criminal.　Thinking　of　Hester’s　betrayal,　thinking　of　dream　disillusion　of　the　happy　life　with　Hester,　thinking　of　the　shame　Hester　had　brought　to　him,　he　planed　his　crazy　revenge　step　by　step,　using　his　vigor　and　intelligence.　In　order　to　verify　his　suspicion　to　Dimmesdale,　the　tried　all　means　to　bee　a　friend　of　Dimmesdale　and　then　became　his　doctor.　At　last　he　pleted　his　suspicion.　After　the　death　of　Dimmesdale,　he　died　a　year　later.　Chillingworth’s　behavior　exposed　selfish　character.　His　selfishness　destroyed　not　only　himself　but　also　others.

2．The　reasons　of　Chillingworth's　devil

When　Roger　Chillingworth,　Hester's　husband　finally　arrived,　he　discovered　his　wife　had　mitted　adultery.　Being　an　educated　man　with　superb　skills　at　medicine　and　literature,　Why　then　would　he　choose　to　remain　in　Boston　and　attempt　to　destroy　Dimmesdale?　The　most　likely　reasons　are　either　revenge　or　for　the　challenge　of　solving　a　mystery.　The　motive　revenge　relies　on　the　fact　that　he　failed　to　father　a　child　with　Hester.　However,　this　explanation　is　faulty　in　several　ways.　He　could　just　easily　wish　to　seek　revenge　on　Hester　for　not　staying　true　to　him,　or　he　could　leave　her　and　start　a　new　family　elsewhere.　As　for　the　explanation　argues　he　is　solving　the　mystery,　Chillingworth's　behavior　was　too　sublimely　cruel　if　that　is　the　only　reason.　Nowadays　we　can　seek　lots　of　ways　of　dealing　with　adultery.　We　can　let　them　bear　the　responsibilities　and　make　up　for　it　rather　than　seek　revenge. 3．The　mercilessness　of　Roger　Chillingworth

Chillingworth　once　had　been　an　honest,　rational　man.　But　he　also　was　the　victim　of　a　moral　sin.　and　his　revenge　seemed　justifiable.　But　he　was　depicted　as　the　most　hatful　figure　in　this　novel.　Why?　To　the　beginning,　there　was　no　love　between　Chillingworth　and　Hester；　and　true　love　usually　should　be　the　highest　judge..　Secondly,　his　behavior　of　revenge　was　inhuman.　Being　one　of　the　medical　scientists,　he　act　as　a　inhuman　doctor.　In　dealing　with　human　problem　his　behavior　was　not　accepted.“I　will　seek　this　man,　as　I　have　sought　truth　in　books,　as　I　have　sought　gold　in　adultery”.1　He　had　began　all　investigation　which　as　if　he　found　new　element　or　solved　a　mathematical　problem,　is　to　revenge　his　enemy　—Dimmesdale.　In　Dimmesdale’s　words　“the　old　man’　revenge　has　been　blacker　than　my　sin　he　has　violated　in　cold　blood　the　sanctity　of　a　human”.　So,　in　both　author　and　readers’　eyes,　Chillingworth　had　bee　uglier　and　uglier.　So　he　became　the　less　acceptable　person.

4．Chillingworth’s　kindness

In　the　Scarlet　Letter,　Chillingworth　is　welled　considered　as　an　opposite　figure.　But　we　could　find　Chillingworth’s　another　side　of　human　nature—kindness.　We　can　make　it　from　his　attitude　to　pearl.　He　did　much　better　things　than　his　actual　father.　In　chapter　four,　his　first　care　was　given　to　the　child.　And　he　aslo　was　a　qualified　doctor　and　father.　In　addition　when　Hester—mother　of　Pearl　went　to　governor　Bellingham’　hall　in　order　to　keep　the　right　of　bringing　up　Pearl　on　her　own　,　Chillingworth　is　the　only　man　who　smiled　,smiled　by　the　humorous　answers　when　asked　by　Mr.　Wilsonr.　It　was　easy　to　find　that　the　smile　is　out　of　his　bottom　of　heart.　Before　his　death,　he　leaves　all　of　his　estates　to　Pearl　that　made　Pearl　happily　.All　of　these　expose　the　responsibility　as　a　father

Conclusion

Different　cultures　and　beliefs　make　different　characteristics　of　people　who　lived　in.　The　same　is　with　Chillingworth.　But　we　all　know　that　one　coin　has　two　sides.　Usually　people　often　neglect　the　kindness　of　Chillingworth　and　hate　the　inhuman　of　Chillingworth.　Just　for　me　it　is　injustice.　As　I　analyses　in　this　thesis,　we　also　should　pay　more　attention　to　the　active　side　of　Chillingworth.　I　dare　say　that　any　man　would　want　his　own　life　love　him.　From　human　moral　standard,　I　do　not　hold　that　there　are　something　wrong　with　Chillingworth’　revenge.　There　is　an　old　saying　“a　fair
